What is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel creates a controlled wound to rapidly remove the top layer of your skin to unveil fresh skin cells. As with all skincare treatments, remember that everyone’s skin is different, and it is impossible to pre-determine initial and long-term results.
How does it work?
A chemical peel solution is applied to your skin, speeding up your cell turnover. Over the next 3 to 8 days your skin will slough off revealing fresh skin. Think of it as a glow-up party for your face.
Who can benefit?
Chemical peels are appropriate for acne, age management, and moderate skin resurfacing. It can help lessen fine lines, dark spots, and as a tool for clearing acne.
Who should never?
The big three of never shall I ever apply a chemical peel are:
- If your skin is fragile, sensitive, or reactive.
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- If you’re currently taking Accutane or using a prescription Retinol

How do I prepare for a treatment?
Pause the use of all at-home exfoliation, whether it’s a physical or chemical exfoliant. How long you’ll need to stop before your treatment is determined by the exfoliation product you’re using. Accutane and prescription retinols must be stopped 12-months prior to a chemical peel. We will go over your specific situation and set up your appointments accordingly.
What should I expect during a treatment?
A treatment takes about 30-minutes. You’ll receive a deep pore cleanse, the peel, appropriate serums and creams. Extractions are skipped during this treatment.
Your skin may feel warm, tingly, “stingly,” or kind of hot. You should never feel like your skin is burning or “on fire.” Oh, and what do I mean by “stingly?” It’s a combination of a light tingling sensation that borders on a stinging sensation.
When you opt for a peel series, it is one chemical peel per week for six weeks with a post-peel facial treatment two weeks after your last peel.
The frequency depends on your goals and what your skin can tolerate. If your skin will not tolerate a chemical peel, I’ll present alternative treatment options that help you reach your skincare goals.
What does the after-care look like?
Your skin will be in repair-mode and your after-care needs to support the healing process. This means a pause on active, stimulating products and at-home exfoliation.
When you do a peel series with Skin Care by Alison, you’ll go home with a complete homecare system designed to support the healing process. Your kit includes a gentle deep pore cleansing duo, calming moisturizer, specialty mask, hydrating serum, and SPF 30 all at no additional cost to you. Following your homecare routine will help you be successful in preventing unwanted pigmentation, scarring, or permanent damage.
